ABSTRACT: This monograph is a compilation of 14 articles by anthropologist Lowell John Bean. The articles presented here include the topics of California Indian shamanism, religious systems, power, ethnology, and public and educational discourse. Lowell Bean has worked with the Palm Springs Cahuilla for over 60 years (see chapters 13 and 14). He has also produced ethnographies for the Pomo, the Ohlone, the Hopi, the Yosemite Miwok, as well as all the desert tribes of Southern California. The geographic span of his anthropology allowed him to do extensive cultural surveys and comparisons of social systems throughout the state of California. (See chapters 1 and 9) He was a university professor for 40 years and was passionate about educating students, school teachers, and the general public about Native California. (See chapters 4, 6, 10, and 11) Theoretically his strongest interest and most serious contributions have been in the complexities of indigenous religions. (See chapters 2, 3, 7, and 8) Because he works so closely with Indian people, he is also a scholar of modern Native institutions. (See chapters 5 and 12) There is also a curriculum vitae (chapter 15) and citation guide (chapter 16). This anthology introduces the reader to the depth and breath of writing from this important scholar.
